HDC WINS LATHROP HOUSE REHABILITATION
HDC has been commissioned by Toledo Metroparks to rehabilitate the Lathrop House, an Underground Railroad site located in Sylvania, Ohio. The original “upright and wing” portion of the house was built in 1835. Lucian Lathrop purchased the house in 1840 and proceeded to build a large addition in the Greek Revival style to accommodate his large family. Twentieth century additions were demolished when the house was moved a short distance in 2004. HDC has been charged with conducting literary and physical research to restore the exterior elevations to their mid 19th century condition and to stabilize the house in the first of four phases of work. Ultimately, Lathrop House will function as a house museum where visitors can experience the house both as a fugitive slave entering the basement and as a guest entering the front door.

HDC COMPLETES SHAKER LABORATORY WORK
Work progresses on the North Family Lot, Union Village Data Recovery project. HDC archaeologists have finished artifact analysis and are focusing on production of four monographs in collaboration with ODOT-OES and OHPO staff that will focus on four broad themes: a project summary volume, a volume on Shaker landscape history and dynamics, a volume on the social history of the Shakers, with an emphasis on the place of the North Family Lot in relation to Union Village as a whole and interactions with the local market economy, and a volume that focuses on the redware pottery industry at Union Village, which will present the first formal redware typology of its kind for southwestern Ohio. HDC principal investigator Andrew Sewell has been actively presenting on the results of the project, with recent papers given at the 2005 Midwest Archaeology Conference in Dayton, Ohio, and the 2006 Society for American Archaeology conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

HDC NOMINATES TAVERN TO THE NRHP
HDC completed a National Register nomination for the John Baker Tavern. The tavern is located in Radnor, Delaware County, Ohio. This two-story brick building was constructed in 1849 and served as a tavern as well as a residence until 1862 when ownership of the building changed. From 1862 to the present the building has been in use as a single family home. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination for the tavern was presented to the Ohio National Register Advisory Board on April 17, 2006. The Advisory Board accepted the nomination a few minor comments. HDC is currently awaiting comments from the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
HDC COMPLETED ICRMP UPDATE FOR WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB
HDC has been working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, since 1991. Over the years, HDC has completed archaeological excavations, HABS/HAER documentation, environmental studies support, graphic brochures, historic building inventories, and Section 106 support. HDC just finished the update of the Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan (ICRMP) that the firm first completed in 1998. The updated ICRMP integrates all the work HDC has been completing in the past 15 years with new and improved graphics and GIS mapping.

DONUT OUTGROWS PUPPYHOOD (SORT OF)
On March 25, 2006, Donut turned two years old, officially becoming an
adolescent. Some people never thought she’d live to see this
day! Although Donut has calmed down quite a bit from her “Cujo” days,
she still enjoys playing with toys, other puppies/dogs, and employee’s
kids when they visit the office. Her most famous trick is where she
plays dead after someone points a finger at her in the shape of a
gun and says “Bang!” Donut actually spends a good amount
of time sleeping in her bed, except at lunch when she cruises key
desks for crumbs and waits for the mail carrier to bring her a biscuit.

HDC SAYS GOODBYE TO SADIE…
On May 29, 2006, Sadie the Beagle passed away due to advanced abdominal cancer. She had recently had a clean bill-of-health in April, and was brought to the vet when she had trouble walking. At that time, the vet discovered that an extremely fast-growing tumor had just about incapacitated Sadie in less than a month.
Sadie first came to HDC in January 1997. She had collapsed at the door of the Wayne National Forest offices in Athens, Ohio, where Ann Cramer, one of HDC’s clients at the time, was active in Athens Pound Rescue. Ann nursed Sadie back to health and proceeded to find her a home. Sadie stayed with HDC for 8 months, where we tried to instill some obedience training. Unfortunately, Sadie was too fidgety to sit still! In August, she went to Akron, Ohio, to stay with Don Durst’s mother, who had recently lost her dog. Bagle the Beagle was much relieved—she did not appreciate the thought of no longer being the only beagle! Sadie lived happily in Akron with annual visits to Columbus. Bagle tolerated these visits once she realized they were just temporary and that she was still The Boss.
Sadie is remembered for her unusual coloring and absolutely sweet disposition. You could do anything to that beagle and never get a snarl, growl or bite out of her. (This included twirling her while she lay on her back!) We figure Sadie was about 13 years old at the time of her passing. Good-bye Sadie, and have fun tormenting Bagle again!
