ANTITERRORISM-FORCE PROTECTION STUDY
Hardlines Design Company (HDC) conducted an Antiterrorism-Force Protection (ATFP) Study for entry gates located on historic districts at a Navy installation and an Army installation. HDC conducted design charettes at each base and the resulting report analyzed deficiencies in the existing gates and made recommendations to meet current ATFP standards. Two design solutions were presented per base.

ROSS COUNTY DATA RECOVERY PROJECT COMPLETED
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) contracted HDC in 2001 to implement the data recovery plan developed by ASC Group, Inc., for the four prehistoric sites in Liberty and Jefferson Townships, Ross County, Ohio (33Ro583, 33Ro596, 33Ro616, and 33Ro709) that would be adversely affected by the relocation of U.S. 35. Portions of each of these four sites were within the right-of-way (ROW) of the preferred alternative alignment for U.S. 35. Fieldwork was conducted at the four sites in two time blocks: eight weeks in November and December of 2001, and six weeks in March and April of 2002. Phase III mitigation at 33Ro583 resulted in the identification of 58 prehistoric cultural features and the recovery of 2,369 artifacts from a variety of contexts. While 33Ro583 is a multi-component site, the features comprising the circular paired post structure and the midden cluster represent the dominant occupation at this site, dating to a transitional period bridging the Early Woodland and the Middle Woodland Periods.

Excavations at 33Ro596 identified 24 prehistoric cultural features and recovered 3,682 artifacts. The most significant cultural component present at the portion of 33Ro596 in the ROW is Middle Woodland. Phase III mitigation at 33Ro616 resulted in the recovery of 16,922 artifacts and the identification of 74 prehistoric and 24 historic cultural features. Results of the field and laboratory investigations revealed a small, in situ Late Archaic component, although the most significant component present at the site is Middle Woodland. Eighteen prehistoric cultural features were identified and 619 artifacts were recovered during the Phase III investigation at 33Ro709.
OHIO RIVER SURVEY PROJECT BACK ON LINE!
After a review period of four years, HDC's survey of lock and dam structures along the Ohio River
between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Cairo, Illinois, has entered the revised draft stage. This
project surveyed structures, houses, and sites associated with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers navigation
technology along the Ohio River. HDC historians hope that review of the revised draft will take less
time!

HDC CONSOLIDATES OFFICE SPACES; BAGLE EXPLORES HER OPTIONS
HDC moved the archeology lab into an adjacent office upon the retirement of the neighboring firm. This move consolidates three formerly separate spaces into one contiguous space that includes expanded offices, an archeology lab, a library, and a kitchenette. An unexpected result is that Bagle the Beagle now has twice as many people from whom to beg a sample of lunch. In fact, Bagle is hardly seen up front anymore since she's discovered archeologists willing to sneak her a snack!
