Campbell Avenue Bridge HAER Documentation, Guernsey County, Ohio

Campbell Avenue Bridge
Hardlines Design Company completed level III HAER documentation of a pony truss bridge constructed in 1958, the Campbell Avenue Bridge in Guernsey County, Ohio. The report included a detailed history of the bridge, provided background material on pony truss bridges, and included large format black and white photographs of the structure. The bridge crosses Wills Creek in Cambridge and is the longest bridge fabricated by the prominent Ohio Bridge Corporation. The Warren pony truss design was a specialty of the Ohio Bridge Corporation, and this design was chosen for the Campbell Avenue Bridge. The company’s founder, Herman Rogovin, perfected the design by welding all of the connections and using rolled section members, both techniques that would reduce rust and result in a higher quality bridge. Most of the bridges constructed by the corporation were from 50 to 120 feet long, but the Campbell Avenue Bridge was unique in that it was 160 feet long, the longest bridge ever fabricated by the company. The Campbell Avenue Bridge was also the only Ohio Bridge Corporation bridge with a built-up upper chord detail.
