Renovation of Stillman Hall Fourth Floor, Columbus, Ohio
For Stillman Hall, HDC renovated an existing fourth-floor space into an executive office suite and meeting rooms for the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy. HDC developed floor plans and submitted multiple design solutions for a flexible yet distinctive space. HDC also held weekly meetings with the University Architect’s Office and the John Glenn Institute to develop program requirements. The program included private offices, a 25-seat conference room, open workstations, storage, a reception area, and a kitchenette. The design accommodated access to existing windows and radiators, existing tile walls and shafts, and restoration of existing 1930s wall murals. The scope of work also called for a design that would allow unobstructed views of all the murals, which affected room placement and necessitated the use of a full-height glass wall.

Rehabilitation of and Addition to the Lincoln Theatre, Columbus, Ohio
The project consisted of documenting, rehabilitating and adding to a historic, National Register Listed, 1920s theatre that is the catalyst for revitalizing a historic downtown neighborhood. The building was originally a fraternity lodge and a key performance space for African-American jazz artists to premiere. It subsequently sat vacant for almost four decades. The initial facility assessment project, with as-built drawings, proposed new uses while maintaining the Theatre’s historic integrity. Starting in 2007, the renovation project included masonry repairs, reconstruction of historic interior features, new seating arrangements, an expanded stage and orchestra pit, expanded backstage and new patron amenities. The building additions included new stairs, a theatre balcony, an accessible elevator, dressing rooms, a green room and a new two-story commemorative exhibition hall/jazz lobby with a concessions area. The project received a 2009 Ohio Historic Preservation Office Merit Award and the 2010 Heritage Ohio award for Best Public Rehabilitation.

DoD Sustainability Guide for Historic Properties
This study presented technical information to incorporate sustainable design principles into historic buildings owned by the Department of Defense (DoD). The study followed the LEED-EB Reference Guide for Existing Buildings, v. 2.0, June 2005, and provided specific discussion and strategies relevant both to historic preservation and to the DoD Criteria for LEED-NC (New Construction). The intent was to provide technical, feasible ways that the DoD can utilize LEED-EB criteria on historic buildings. The strategies and references included in this study were compiled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory–Engineering Research and Development Center and the architectural and engineering team of Hardlines Design Company and Karpinsky Engineering.

Air Force Research Lab Conference Center, WPAFB, Ohio
This project featured involved the renovation of unused laboratory and storage space in a WWII era building into a state-of-the-art tele-conferencing center for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The program involved renovation of existing restrooms, upgrade of the lobby, creation of a display room to highlight AFRL’s work products, and a VIP meeting room with full tele-conferencing capability. HDC upgraded the existing HVAC system, installed new lighting systems and electrical hookups for AV equipment, and specified all furnishings. This project won a 2003 Design Citation Award from both the Air Force Materiel Command Civil Engineer and from the U.S. Air Force.
